Reducing the environmental impact of logistics is one of the biggest challenges facing modern supply chains. McCulla has developed a sustainable transport model that combines renewable energy production with lower-emission fleet technology.

At the centre of this approach is the Alternity Biogas Energy Limited (ABEL) facility. This anaerobic digestion plant converts food waste into renewable biomethane gas, which is used to fuel part of the transport fleet.

This circular energy model links waste recovery, renewable energy production and logistics operations into a single system designed to reduce emissions across the supply chain.

Biomethane Powered Fleet

McCulla operates a growing fleet of trucks powered by biomethane gas produced from food waste.

These vehicles produce significantly lower carbon emissions compared with conventional diesel vehicles. Biomethane trucks can reduce carbon emissions by up to 93 percent while also producing lower levels of air pollutants.

The biomethane fleet supports transport operations across Ireland and nearby regions, particularly on routes where refuelling infrastructure is available.

This technology forms part of McCulla’s wider strategy to reduce the environmental impact of temperature-controlled transport.

The Alternity Biogas Energy Plant

The Alternity plant converts food waste into renewable energy using anaerobic digestion.

During this process, organic waste breaks down in a controlled environment, producing biogas. The gas is refined into biomethane, which can then be used as a transport fuel for heavy goods vehicles.

The plant also generates renewable electricity used to power cold storage facilities and operational sites. This contributes to lower overall emissions across logistics operations. 

In addition to energy production, the digestion process produces biofertiliser, which can be used in agriculture, creating further value from food waste.

Complementary Alternative Fuels

While biomethane forms the core of McCulla’s sustainable transport model, the company is also exploring other lower-emission fuel technologies.

These include vehicles powered by hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), which can reduce carbon emissions by up to 90 percent compared with conventional diesel. 

The use of multiple fuel technologies allows logistics operations to adapt to different routes and infrastructure availability while continuing to reduce environmental impact.
