Alternity Biogas Energy – Renewable Fuel from Food Waste

The Alternity Biogas Energy facility in Lisburn is a key part of McCulla Ireland’s sustainability strategy. The facility converts food waste into renewable biomethane fuel and electricity using anaerobic digestion technology.

This process allows organic waste to be transformed into a valuable energy resource, supporting both renewable fuel production and lower-emission transport operations.

The Alternity plant forms part of a circular logistics model where food waste collected from supply chains can be used to generate renewable energy that helps power logistics operations.

Anaerobic Digestion Technology

The Alternity facility uses anaerobic digestion to process food waste.

During this biological process, organic material breaks down in a controlled environment without oxygen. This produces biogas, which is then refined into biomethane that can be used as a transport fuel.

The digestion process also produces biofertiliser, which can be returned to agriculture, creating additional value from food waste.

This system allows waste materials to be recovered and reused rather than sent to landfill.

Renewable Fuel for Transport

The biomethane produced at the Alternity plant is used to fuel part of McCulla’s heavy goods vehicle fleet.

These trucks operate on renewable gas rather than conventional diesel fuel, helping to reduce emissions associated with logistics operations.

Biomethane-powered vehicles can reduce carbon emissions by approximately 93 percent compared with traditional diesel trucks.

This renewable fuel system supports McCulla’s commitment to developing lower-emission transport solutions across its logistics network.

Renewable Energy for Operations

In addition to producing renewable transport fuel, the Alternity plant also generates electricity.

This electricity is used to help power operational facilities including cold storage infrastructure, supporting a more sustainable approach to logistics operations.

By producing renewable energy on site, the facility contributes to reducing the overall environmental footprint of logistics and storage operations.
